Anna the Duchess of Bedford is often credited with the invention of Afternoon tea in the 1840·s. Traditionally Dinner was not served until 8.30 or 9pm in the evenings and the Duchess often became hungry and ordered small meals to be sent to her boudoir secretly, after a while she began inviting her friends to join her. The concept of the small meal became popular and eventually became known as afternoon tea. Obviously the origins of the well-known British tradition of afternoon tea cannot be credited to only one woman but evolved over a period of time. Shelly·s 8 Bold Street was built in that period and the lady who lived here Miss Julia Smith most probably had ·Afternoon Tea· served to her friends in this very room as this was her parlour. Just a little story for you to read as your tea is being prepared!
